Two years ago, I saw an email about Habitat's Women Build event, and on a whim decided that this was something I could do...and I got hooked.
My personal connection with Habitat for Humanity dates back to 2003, when my then 5-year-old daughter, Danya, decided to forgo birthday party gifts, in favour of raising money to "help people have homes". I believe she raised about $600, and we were so proud of her.
Having a home that I own and enjoy thoroughly, is a privilege I never take for granted. It seems wrong to me that so many hard working and responsible people/families just never get the opportunity to experience this. I am hardly what you would call a "handy" person, but when I found out about Women Build, I knew this was something I could do, and make a hands-on difference.
Two years ago, I learned all about acoustic sealant. On last year's build, I graduated to sub-flooring installation, and I can't wait to see what's in store for me this year, as I pick up my hammer, on September 28!
